COMPOSER IRVING BERLIN BORN IN 1888
< author: 1888 >

Sir Irving Berlin

Irving Berlin (1888-1989) was one of the most important songwriters in the USA. He was self-taught, but almost everything he wrote was a success. His breakthrough was during WWI with the song “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and one of the battle songs written for his all-soldier show Yip, Yip, Yaphank in 1917: “We’re on our way to France”….(CLICK IMAGE TO READ MORE)

THE DRINKING STRAW…1888
< author: 1888 >

null

The drinking straw is a device used for transferring a liquid - usually a drink from one location to another (such as from a cup, to your mouth). The earliest drinking straws were hollow stems of grass, literally made of straw. A thin tube of plastic (such as polypropylene and polystyrene) or other material, straight or with an accordion-like living hinge, it is employed by being held with one end in the mouth and another end in the drink. Muscular action reduces air pressure in the mouth, whereupon atmospheric pressure forces the drink up the straw. The first straws were made by the Sumerians, and used for drinking beer (as to avoid the solid byproducts of fermentation). Argentines and their neighbors use a similar metallic device called bombilla that acts as both a straw and sieve for drinking mate tea. The modern drinking straw was patented in 1888 by Marvin C. Stone.

New songs in the works + vid of us performing “There’s Always Something There To Remind Me”
< author: 1888 >

1888 is back in the studio writing and rehearsing new material for our second full-length album. Unfortunately our dear friend and lead guitarist/vocalist needed to take a significant break from the 1888 family. So we are working hard to adapt what we can from “HONEY, I’D KILL…” as well as develop the new stuff. We look forward to playing soon and hope you dig the new sound….which will make spines tingle guranteed.
Check out this vid of us rocking “There’s Always Something There To Remind Me”…We were up for Best Album of the Year and Best Pop/Rock band for the 2007 Portfolio Weekly Music Awards so we took part of the awards ceremony which was themed around the year 1983(which was the year that Portfolio Weekly started). We were asked to pick a song from 1983’s Top 100 billboard charts so we picked the above….electronic drums and all. Of course Bobby had to play with one hand due to his recovering from the thumb laceration.

till next time 1888ers!

SHOW TONIGHT! WE LOVE YOU PAUL SHUGRUE & 89.5FM
< author: 1888 >

We’re huge fans of Pauls show OUT OF THE BOX, which airs at 7-9PM monday through thursday on 89.5FM and WHRV.ORG - He inherited Raleigh Radio’s time slot some years ago and came up with this daring concept in radio where he features all music that is newly recorded or released. His playlists are very diverse but always fresh off the presses and tastefully represented….and most importantly he really helps out the local music scene more than most radio hosts in the area. Lets face it Hampton Roads He is a Godsend and simply plays really cool music for free on the radio. So thanks again Paul.

To get to the point…He has been doing a BEST OF 2007… thing throughout the rest of the year which already started and tonight he was playing “THE BEST ROCK BANDS OF 2007″ and we made the playlist! So to say the least, we’re super excited about that. He also hooked tonights show up with a plug which was super duper cool of him.

A cool thing about “OUT OF THE BOX” is that they put each 2 hour show online to stream for 24 hours after the original broadcast which then is replaced with the consecutive nights broadcast and so on.

So go ahead….its FRIDAY!…Click HERE to listen to Paul’s radio show “OUT OF THE BOX” for free online.

Here is the flyer and links to tonight’s performers below….
